THE SALES EVENT OF FINNISH PAINTERS' UNION 2016
[ about the provenance of this triptych ] [ - in fact quite dull story first and facts only - ] [ advicing to skip this if not concidering to buy ] [ then suddenly the plot thickens by the end of the story ] [ who the fck knows what will happen next if somebody does not buy these soon ] Story behind this piece of work It was summer 2005. Salo Artist Association has a role in the making of these works. It went like this : In the previous summer (2004) I had been approved in Salo Artists' Association as a full member after moving away from Helsinki just before I had a chance to apply for the membership of Helsinki Artists' Association. (This fact still bugs me, because of course I had big plans, and the moving was not part of these plans and not at all scheduled on my chosen career path. But as we all know so well, shit happens, what can I say. ) The Approval had happened like this : I drove to Rikalanmäki, Halikko near Salo to take my works to a local artists' association's open annual summer exhibition jury. Incidentally The Board of Salo Artists' Association was just going to hold a meeting in Rikalanmäki as I was bringing my works there to be juried and it so happened that I had my membership application and my portfolio with me just in case - I had prepared myself to humbly just ask if it would be possible to submit my application there at the same time... so not only did I get to leave it there, I also got to hear their decision immediately on site as they told me to stay put and wait a little for the decision. It turned out that because I already was an aspiration member in the Finnish Painters' Union, there was no problem to immediately be accepted as a full member in a local association - I had already passed a much bigger jury. Later that day, also my works passed the Salo Artists' Association 2004 Annual Exhibition jury. Now a year had passed, and it was the time for the jury of The Annual Exhibition of summer of 2005 at the same location, in the so called "Vendi Museum" of Rikalanmäki in Halikko in southwestern Finland. The theme of the coming exhibition was "Hanging". Well not hanging but hanging, of course. I started to ponder the theme, and decided to paint in honor of the recent membership according to the special hanging conditions in this particular joint exhibition space. After my 2002 graduation I had been taking as my agenda to design each exhibition display like a total installation, give it my full capacity, take it seriously, regardless of exhibition space's dignity or merit - taking into consideration each and every slightest detail of the exhibition site of flooring and wall sockets all the way down - I wanted passionately to prepare all my works to each space. I was totally orientated as a space-building artist, I wanted to create a space to change the status of the overall atmosphere. During the previous year's exhibition in Rikalanmäki I had examined the possibilities and specialties in Rikalanmäki, and 2005 I knew exactly what to do. In that exhibition space was only one solid wall, which was painted black, and below the slant ceiling was a very low wall (less than a meter high) of darkish timber. Thus, the paintings had to be small, a horizontally mounted a series, and very luminous and bright, the color energy of a glowing quality. A few years earlier, in January 2002 I had began to paint small, square coloristic paintings for my graduation degree as a painter, and these colour studies had grown to a series of works called "4 x 28 = 107". Now I decided to try as painting supports the white cardboards that painter Raija Marttinen had found while she was cleaning her studio for moving, and had donated these ready to use boards to me - so the painting bases is done very well by her. I cut those received cardboards using the size 24 x 24 cm. I switched the color palette in my mind to fit the black walls and that dark timber. It had to be bright red, I decided. I tested many different combinations of all reds I had, and I had many. I invented a particular trechnique to use three reds layer by layer together with objects ( those chair -like things ) painted with two different blues, which I also invented how to make them look like the blue is deeper in the painting and somehow like deep water. I also learned how to use varnish to enhance the colour. These three little works were really significant to me in my developing my colorism painting techniques. As a result of this careful planning, working and taking every detail in concideration, the works passed the jury and they were hanged exactly as I had thought. A perfect success ! Except that nobody bought them. And note - they were not expensive at all. And let me tell you, they are not expensive now either. So - the works continued their journey to the following exhibitions ... In November 2005 this triptych was featured in Helsinki City Hammaslääkärit lobby along with some other red paintings of mine, as a side-exhibition to my Helsinki debut solo exhibition in a gallery. This act is concidered to be the most meaningful in an artist's career in Finland. Yep. So I had given some time and concideration to select that particular gallery wishing it would promote me seriously and take me as one equal artist in its stable of seriously working artists. Yep. My solo exhibition was called 20.12.2012 in Gallery Johan S., which was located in the core of the Finnish Capital - across Helsinki Market Hall by the sea - this gallery, by the way, just last month ceased to exist. It is maybe unnecessary to mention, but nobody bought these works from that dentist lobby either. And no luck with my other squares in that expensive gallery either, so I was in bankrupt and still am, btw, because of this. So much for my deep conciderations. As said, shit happens. The next time this triptych was featured was 2008 in a juried co-exhibition in Salo Blue House Gallery, to display the fresh new members of the Salo Artists' Association. Nobody was interested to buy. I was not surprised. At that point I had begun to understand that even if I put all my energy and view of colors in my works, it did not make any difference in my sales statistics. From 2011 works have been displayed in my profile in the Register of the Artists' Association of Finland among other works in my profile, and from 2015 these works are steadily on my own website. During this last period my whole fucking life changed completely. And I mean it literally. After a month the next stop of this ten-year stretch of travels these paintings have been through will be then in the huge and famous and legendary cultural house Cable Factory in Helsinki. In the works are evidences and traces of lengthy travels, I wonder do I let them serve as evidence of the history or will I fix the slightly damaged varnish ... Pondering : ) --> okay fixed a little. Check also the backsides of the works. / Oli kesä 2005. Olin muuttanut pois Helsingistä ja hyväksytty Salon Taiteilijaseuran täysjäseneksi edellisenä kesänä 2004 : sattumoisin taiteilijaseuran hallitus piti kokousta Rikalanmäellä juuri kun toin jäsenhakemustani ja teoksiani kesän 2004 vuosinäyttelyyn, ja sain kuulla positiivisen päätöksen heti. Myöhemmin myös työni olivat läpäisseet Salon Taiteilijaseuran kesän 2004 vuosinäyttelyn jyrytyksen. Nyt oli tulossa jurytys kesän 2005 vuosinäyttelyyn samaan paikkaan, Halikon Rikanlanmäen " Vendimuseoon " näyttelyn teemana "RIIPPUU". Otin teeman pohdintaan ja päätin maalata tuoreen jäsenyyteni kunniaksi teokset juuri tämän yhteisnäyttelytilan ehdoilla. Olin vuoden 2002 valmistumiseni jälkeen ottanut syvällisesti agendakseni suunnitella jokaisen näyttelyni esillepanon installaationomaiseksi ihan koko kapasiteetillani, tosissani, riippumatta näyttelytilan arvokkuudesta tai ansioista - huomioiden jokaikisen pienenkin yksityiskohdan näyttelypaikassa lattiapinnoitteita ja sähkörasioita myöten - halusin intohimoisesti valmistaa kaikki teoskokonaisuuteni kulloisen tilan mukaan. Olin tila -orientoitunut, halusin luoda tiloja, muuttaa tilan kokonaistunnelman. Kymmenvuotisen taipaleen seuraava pysähdyspaikka on sitten kuukauden kuluttua Kaapelitehtaan Merikaapelihalli. Teoksissa on todisteena jälkiä pitkiltä matkoiltaan, mietin annanko niiden olla todisteena historiasta vai korjaanko vernissausta ... Pohdinnassa : ) --> fixasin vähän, ja tsekkaa myös takapuolet. photo © 2016 Tiina Hölli photo 2015 and 2016 Riikka Niittonen Tiina Hölli in Kaapelitehdas / Cable Factory, Helsinki in March 2016 and March 2015 Artworks in the pictures by Hannu Nikander and Riikka NiIttonen and Jussi TwoSeven It was spring 2016. Feet are no longer on the ground. It is in fact quite much that can occur in 4 months. Hours running waiting on the 4-laned-motorways in Istanbul knowing traffic jams ... while should have been at the airport already ... Been there. Seen it. Done that. It is good to have plan B with Riikka Niittonen and Taina Kurtze ... thus once again also this year I just and just made it, and my works were delivered in time to Salo Artists' Association's Annual Exhibition, this year 1 - 26.6.2016 in Teijon Masuuni in Finland - drove myself there from the airport to fill in forms, and my colleagues drove my works there to be hanged ... all this to not let this one of these multiple lives to occur too easily either ... After that THE SALES EVENT OF FINNISH PAINTERS' UNION 2016 in March in Helsinki, there will still be the painting pair called Feet on the ground 1 and Feet on the ground 2 waiting for The Right Owner, this time in Teijon Masuuni. I still set the price at 400 € per painting, but next time my pricing politics will make a strongly steep move - upwards. These works have a Story, that now involves also hot weather, sweating, sperm and several adventures on airports. It will not be that easy to give them up lightly anymore. In this exhibition jury Eero Markuksela and the hanging master Seppo Lagom hanged the two paintings like this (below) : / Oli kevät 2016. Jalat maassa taakse jäänyttä. Se on muuten aika paljon mitä ehtii tapahtua neljässä kuukaudessa. Nelikaistaisilla Istanbulin moottoriteillä tuntien odottelu tuntien ruuhkat tuntien juostessa ... kun olisi jo oltava lentokentällä ... Been there. Seen it. Done that. Tuleekin olemaan vaikeampaa luopua näistä teoksista tulevaisuudesa. Tässä näyttelyssä jury Eero Markuksela ja ripustusvastaava Seppo Lagom ripustivat teokset näin : Photo © 2016 Tiina Hölli I guess it is quite needless to say, but nobody bought these paintings from the joint exhibition at Teijon Masuuni. So the works are with me again. I am thinking it is set that I should keep them myself. I have also begun to anticipate that I am going to have an excellent and huge collection of priceless paintings. Mine. Well why not. I think they are fabulous. / Helmikuu 2020. I am at it again. Toinen yritys Kaapelilla THE SALES EVENT OF THE FINNISH PAINTERS’ UNION 7.3. – 15.3.2020. Mutta ! Hintapolitiikka on muuttunut : diptyykin hinta on vain 600 €. Moni pehmenee näin vuosien vaihtuessa.
